Welcome to Brunei..
- A peaceful and prosperous country
with a very low crime rate located on the north western shores of Borneo.
- About two-thirds of the population is Malay; the rest are Chinese or members
of the indigenous tribes. Bahasa Melayu (Malay) is the official language, but
English is widely spoken.
- The telecommunications system in Brunei is
on par with the best in the region. You may use your GSM phone in Brunei. The
3G system is also in use.
- Many shops are open till
late in the evening whilst some cafes providing free wireless internet access
open 24 hours a day.
- Taxis are metered and can be found at taxi stands,
airport and major hotels. There are several car rental agencies including
Hertz and Avis.
- Brunei is a dry - no alcohol - country, however a non-Muslim
over 17 years of age may bring in not more than two bottles (about 2 quarts) of
liquor and 12 cans of beer for personal consumption. These must be declared to
customs upon arrival.
- The Brunei dollar is on par with the Singapore dollar.
- US$1 (One American Dollar) is equivalent to about B$1.50 (One Brunei Dollar and Fifty Cents).
- The national carrier Royal Brunei Airlines provide scheduled services across Asia, the Middle-East, Australasia and Europe.
